If you’ve ever wanted to learn a quick and easy binding technique for single pages, you’re in the right place. Today, I’ll be showing you how to create a beautiful and functional Slip Knot Binding, which is super simple, doesn’t require sewing, and only takes a few minutes to complete. Plus, the best part? The pages will lay perfectly flat!

What You’ll Need:
- String, cord, or any material suitable for binding
- Hole punch
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pencil (optional)
- Reinforcers or grommets (optional for extra durability)
This technique is incredibly flexible and allows you to create a handmade book or journal using just a few materials.
Step 1: Measure & Mark Your Holes
First, decide on the size of your book or journal and measure the height. For my project, I’ve decided to make three holes, but feel free to adjust based on your needs (3-5 holes is typical).
Once you’ve decided how many holes you need, mark where you’d like them to go. Tip: Don’t punch the holes too close to the edge of your pages, or they may rip. If you want extra durability, you can add hole reinforcers or grommets to strengthen the binding.
Step 2: Punch Your Holes
Using your marked guide, punch holes along the spine of your pages. Start with your cover page, and use this as a template for punching holes in the rest of your pages. Make sure everything is aligned properly as you go.
Step 3: Cut Your Binding String
You’ll need three pieces of string (or more, depending on the number of holes), each about four times the length of your book’s height. This will give you plenty of extra string for tying and any decorative “dangles” you’d like to add later.
Step 4: Begin Binding from the Back
Start with the back page of your book. Take one piece of string and fold it in half. Then, insert the looped end through the top hole, pull the string through, and make sure the two ends are on the outside. This creates a simple Lark’s Head knot.
Repeat this step for each hole, pulling the strings tight as you go. You don’t need to tighten everything completely until you’ve finished all the pages.
Step 5: Add Each Page to the Binding
Now that you’ve started binding your pages, it’s time to add your next pages. Place your next page on top and run your string through the holes in the same way. Make sure the strings stay straight and aligned, then tighten them a little after each pass.
Repeat this for all pages, always tightening as you go.
Step 6: Reach the Cover
When you reach the cover, you’ll follow the same process. However, this is where the binding becomes slightly different. Once your last page is in place, take one string and thread it through the cover from one side, bringing it out through the other. Do the same with the other string, creating a criss-cross pattern under the cover.
Step 7: Tighten & Tie the Knots
Once all the pages are bound and in place, it’s time to tighten everything. Make sure your strings are tight but not overly strained.
Now, finish off by tying each end with a square knot. For those unfamiliar with square knots, it’s simple: under, over, over, under. Repeat for all remaining ends.
Step 8: Admire Your Beautiful Bind
Once all the knots are tied and secure, your slip knot binding is complete! You’ll see that the pages lay perfectly flat, and the spine has a lovely, elegant V-shaped pattern reminiscent of a French braid.
