I was commissioned to make a junk journal for a lovely young lady with a passion for sloths. I will say this was an exciting challenge for me, as I know very little about sloths, except that they have their own little microcosm in their fur since they hardly ever move – like mini planets! But setting that aside, I was pretty eager to make this journal perfect for this special girl. I knew I wanted to make it a soft touch cover so that it would have a sensory quality to it and I wanted it to have some sparkle, so I reused part of an old party dress on some of the cover. And, of course it needed to have sloths all over it. So, in order to not start with just a blank page, I created my very own sloth printable kit, printed it, embellished it, and added it to my signatures. The papers were made using recycled, vintage, and natural dyed papers, as well as bits of fabric, colouring pages and more.
I wanted this journal to be interactive, but still leave lots of space for writing and sticking in pictures, or drawing – whatever she wants to do with it.
Below is a flip through of the book from my YouTube channel if you would like to see how it turned out:
Lucky for me, when she received this journal, her mum sent me a video of her unboxing and it made me cry – I think I nailed it as she was one happy camper! Long live the sloth!
